Rumors have been flying to why DC Comics planned to release only one issue in the last week of August, and now DC Co-Publisher Jim Lee’s talk with USA Today reveals that DC plans to reboot its entire line of characters with fresher looks and stories.
One can’t blame DC for wanting to flush convoluted stories and characters aged past their prime down the continuity toilet, but the real reason for this move is obvious when looking at their plans for digital comics. As of September 2011, all DC comics will become available both in store and online upon release. Combined with the refreshed characters, this will allow new readers to jump on board with a scheduled 52 reader-friendly #1 titles.
Marvel has been steadily providing more and more comics online, but DC is clearly looking to take the lead by offering all titles day-and-date while also combining it with a huge event to spur on sales. As worrisome as a reboot could be to long-time readers, and as heart-stopping it is for retailers to hear everything on their shelf will now be available online, DC’s new strategy to enter the digital age could not be more admirable.
Understandably, longtime fans will be saddened that each of DC’s wonderful characters and their amazing mythologies might be corrupted in order to get a new reader to buy a comic on his iPad. Perhaps a ‘reboot’ like Marvel did with its Ultimate Universe at the turn of the century was a better way to go… but perhaps once DC executes their plan, we’ll all be happily surprised.

As a reader since 1976 who has invested a lot both financially and emotionally in these characters and their mythologies, I feel somewhat devalued and disenfranchised by what I'm hearing. I suspect September might be a good time for me to start saving about £50 per month to spend on other things.

I suspect I'm probably out too, which may come as a surprise to those who remember my long-running Across the DC Universe feature for Broken Frontier. I can understand from a business sense why DC would want to chase a potentially more profitable digital audience (which seems to be what this is largely about) but I doubt I can summon up the energy to start following yet another reboot of their line. In a funny way I actually have a feeling of liberation about this, and I'm looking forward to splitting spending the £100 or so I dished out a month on DC books between some of the great OGNs coming out from Blank Slate, D&Q, NoBrow, Cinebooks, etc. and 1970s back issues from my favourite online dealer. I'm actually seeing this jumping off point as a really positive thing!

@Andy: Not sure this was the Flashpoint they were talking about :D This is totally about profit. Chuck Dixon has maintained that monthly comics stopped making money years ago and that the only reason their still published is to offset the costs of the popular TPBs. Thing about this is, does DC really need to reboot continuity to offer digital comics? Not really. That's all about filling the coffers. They should just throw continuity out the window. Save them more money in the long run probably and I don't know anybody who keeps up with every issue of these crossover mega-events anyways. Waste of good creativity. Imagine what Johns and Lee and Morrison could do if they were actually allowed to focus on telling good stories rather than spend all their creative juices on plugging whichever character's movie is out next into the next big summer comics event. Stopped buying monthly comics a long time ago cuz of crap like this.

And what's with the stupid v-neck turtlenecks?! Is that dog collar around Wonder Woman's throat? Way to harken back to her pseudo-bondage roots DC! If those are the costume tweaks, what was the point? They're lame.

Not digging this idea. I may sound like an aging fanboy but the grand tapestry of history is part of what I enjoy about superhero comics. If DC loses that, I may lose interest as well. I've always advocated accessible writing and recap pages over full-scale reboots that simply retread the past yet again. I have no interest in reading another new spin on these characters' origins and wondering whether old favorites even exist under the new regime.
And why do they always have Jim Lee do the new designs for things like this? He's a good artist but a terrible designer. I still cringe every time I see his Huntress costume design. -

Totally agree, Eric. The rich, complex history of the DCU was partly what drew me in in the first place. I've no desire to read about new versions of the characters whose lives I've followed for 35 years.
And yes, Jim Lee is overrated. -

I am intrigued by the market implications of this. Any idea how much they will charge for the digital releases? Will there be subscriptions? Tough to tell whether this is a true attempt to reboot not only continuity but go after a new generation of readers. I just want a monthly fix of the Flash that doesn't make my brain hurt.

I am becoming less impressed by the day. Particularly since 'holding the line at $2.99' seems to have been rebooted to $3.99...
