It’s expensive to set up shop and host a table at New York Comic Con—really expensive. I’m talking ridiculously expensive, especially for small press and independent creators who depend on conventions to promote their names and brands.

Prism Comics, the nonprofit organization focused on promoting quality LGBT comics, has a consistent presence at San Diego Comic Con, but nothing here on the on the East Coast. Well, the new organization, GeeksOUT, hopes to fill the void.

Here is their mission statement:

GeeksOUT seeks to highlight the growing presence of the LGBT community within the greater comics and gaming communities. We're reserving a space on the show floor of New York Comic Con 2011 to promote queer creators, to showcase queer-themed comics, and to provide an LGBT-positive space for fans. It will be a great venue for discussion and teen outreach.

Our intent is to raise queer visibility within the geek world. We're planning to host discussion panels, signings, and other fun events, essentially hoisting a flag for queer geeks to flock to.

For those who haven't been before, New York Comic Con is a HUGE event, drawing nearly 100,000 people. According to Crain's, it's the second largest event in NYC! GeeksOUT plans to make a big splash, but we need your help to do it!

Join us on Facebook and stay tuned for announcements. We'll be hosting several online and in-person fundraising events over the next couple months. It's going to be a lot of fun, and all for a great cause!”

Their first event is at the VLADA Lounge in Manhattan, located at 331 West 51st Street, in between Eighth and Ninth Avenue. Click the picture above to see the official announcement poster.

And be sure to check back with the GeeksOUT website to learn about future fundraising events!
