This May, Mark Waid will dismantle the mind of superhero for one final time, as he wraps up Irredeemable and Incorruptible. The concluding story arcs for both BOOM! Studios series start this month in Irredeemable #34 and Incorruptible #27. Come issues #37 and #30, respectively, the curtain falls and that’s that.

In an interview published on Newsarama, Waid said:

“Okay, really, truly — I’m just stretched thin right now both personally and professionally, and I live in mortal fear that I’m going to overstay my welcome on these books. Moreover, I feel that Max Damage’s character arc is reaching its end in ‘Incorruptible’. And in ‘Irredeemable’, I’ve long known what the end of that series is, and lately, it’s as if all the characters are moving into position for it whether I want them to or not. So let’s go out big and grand, I say.”

“Honestly, both series continue to be successful, so it’s a hard decision to make, but it feels like the right time.”

We will be very sad to see the two titles go. It’s impressive enough Waid has managed to carve out his own little universe amongst the spandex crowds of the big-two, but the way he manages to still astound, shock and stun readers month in and month out three years down the line is an incredible achievement.

The conclusion of both series gives us the rare opportunity to see a superhero story with an actual beginning, middle and end. So bring it on, but don’t go expecting an easy ride – the last thing Waid is likely to do is pull any punches.
