Sin City director Robert Rodriguez and his fiancee Rose McGowan announced (at the San Diego Comicon 2008) the movie to be filmed in 2008, with release in 2009. But unfortunately it will be a tad later...
"Because of certain issues and the economy, we had to change our plan a bit," producer Joe Gatta tells The Coventry Telegraph. "It's frustrating because we thought we'd make the movie last year, before Conan."
Gatta also explained that it will disregard the 1985 movie with Brigitte Nielsen starring, and will be focussing the origin of the original Marvel comic book heroine created by Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith in 1973. This character was by the way, originally not a swordwielding Red Sonja but a pistol cracking Red Sonya from a short story by Robert E. Howard, the creator of Conan. And Roy Thomas took those roots as a basis for one of the most fierce females in comics.
