Eric Skillman is an art director for film distributor Criterion in his day job, but he’s also created a few comics, which can be seen at his inspiring design process blog, Cozy Lummox. Though you may not know it, chances are you’ve already seen some of his comics work, as Skillman has designed covers for several Top Shelf books, such as Alec: The Years Have Pants, Playwright and Ax: A Collection of Alternative Manga.
His first OGN, with artist Jhomar Soriano, is a classic noir tale called Liar’s Kiss. Those two words sum up the book’s focus on lust and betrayal splendidly. A dialogue-driven tale which follows ambitious detective Nick Archer, Liar’s Kiss is an entertaining yarn that would make Alfred Hitchcock proud. Archer is tasked with providing proof that the wife of a suspicious millionaire is being unfaithful to him. It’s an easy gig until the millionaire turns up dead and Archer becomes entangled in a spiralling plot, which soon reveals his own agenda.
