A Comic Book Bucket List - Part 2
Column
Posted by Cullen Bunn on Aug 30, 2011
I’m back again with another installment of mayhem I’d like to cause in the comic book world before I die. As you know, a few years back I started a list of characters I wanted to write, series I wanted to work on, and even particular comic books I wanted to own. Last time, I covered such daydreams as working on The Micronauts, writing Klarion and Man-Thing, and completing my Uncanny X-Men collection. This time around (in no particular order) I dive into a few more personal projects.
Finish The Damned
Currently, I’m working on an ongoing comic book series, The Sixth Gun, for Oni Press. My collaborator on this project is Brian Hurtt. Brian and I have The Sixth Gun planned out for roughly 45 – 50 issues which will bring the story to a close. Before Brian and I dove into our supernatural western, though, we worked on a book called The Damned, a story of prohibition era mobsters and demons. We did two limited series in that universe (only one of which has been collected as a trade paperback).
One of the questions I’m asked most often is if and when we’ll be returning to the world of The Damned. As with The Sixth Gun, Brian and I have a definite ending in mind for The Damned. We both love Eddie and Morgan and the Worm and Big Al and all the other characters we created for the series. We’ve always planned on returning to that world. The next story arc, “Daughter’s Danse,” is plotted. Right now, we’re trying to work some time into our schedule so we can do the next arc of the book sooner rather than later.
Either way, we both desperately want to show our readers how that story ends. I don’t think anyone will see what’s coming.
Complete a CGC-Graded Run of The Micronauts
How long have CGC-graded comics been around? I dunno. A long time. Anyway, I never really saw the point. I wanted to read my comics, not seal them away. Even though I still want to read my comics, I’ve started to change my tune in the last six months or so. I want to have some of the comics that meant the most to me graded so I can put them away as a keepsake for my son.
Most of the books I’m considering getting graded are not very valuable. In most cases, I already have a couple of copies that I’ve snagged out of quarter boxes. I’ve started small. I only have three books that have been graded so far (Uncanny X-Men #145 and The Micronauts #1 and #7). These were books that meant something to me when I was younger. As I started thinking about those books that shaped who I was as a reader, collector, and creator, The Micronauts came up again and again.
So, I thought it might be a nice collecting challenge to get them all “slabbed.” It’ll take me forever, but that’s part of the fun.
A Couple of Top Secret Projects
Originally, I had three creator-owned projects that I was going to list in this column individually. All three are concepts I’ve wanted to work on for a long while.
However, there is now activity on all three projects, and they’ll be seeing the light of day relatively soon. Keep in mind, “relatively” can mean a lot of things in the world of comic books. But they are all three moving quickly enough that I’ve decided it’s best to keep the titles and concepts under wraps until they’re officially announced.
For now, I’ll just tell you that they include a horror concept, a sci-fi/horror action concept, and a comic geared for younger readers.
I’m a tease, yeah, but you wouldn’t like me any other way.
