This was the first year that Emerald City Comic Con was organised for three days. The crowds made it apparent that it was the right move to make. For all rights and purposes, ECCC has arrived.

This year's 11th annual show was the second that I'd had the pleasure of attending and I'm glad to report that the focus of the show is most certainly on the comics.

Well, from a book sales point of view, graphic novels are the only section of major chain bookstores (other than young adult titles) that have seen significant growth over the last few years. On the heels of such successful (box office if not critical) comic book films, book stores have been able to sell a lot of graphic novels to casual fans through cross promotion. It's why stores such as Borders and B & N have expanded their graphic novel sections over the last year. What Hastings is banking on is that some of those casual (or lazy?) fans that come into their store for graphic novels will start purchasing day and date releases off the rack. It's an interesting strategy and with such major media conglomerates as Disney and WB being involved in the comic game, it seems logical for a supplier like Hastings to want to get in bed with that aspect of entertainment. I wonder though if you'll see a decrease in sales in communities that have good, established LCSs. I certainly wouldn't abandon my shop to go buy the same comics at the same price from a massive Best Buy competitor.

These Shadowland covers/preview images are fantastic. I'm rather embarrassed to admit that I haven't read most of Brubaker's run-up, as the long run by Smith/Bendis left such a bad taste in my mouth that I abandoned the character for some time. I guess it's time to get back into it.

It does seem that they aren't even on the pulse of what's popular or smart at times. Not Marvel as much, as they've handled character death in a much more diplomatic and entertaining way over the last few years, but DC has been all over the place. The wholesale slaughter that was Blackest Night aside, they decided as a company to "kill" Bruce Wayne/Batman right after a movie featuring the character had broken every box office record possible. Then who did they replace him with? A character that isn't even in the movie. If they truly are interested in getting new readers into comics, there are much better ways to do it.
