Ah. Got it. Well, in all acutality, this was a comp comic for review. Since I'm still on sabbatical, no review. Even if I HADN'T been on sabbatical I wouldn't have reviewed it because, as you can see from the rant above, I don't think I could have quite kept my ire in check.

My "Comics Scanning Power" has 'failed' me? In what way?

Okay, has the world gone nuts or is it just me?! This comic was TERRIBLE!!! Athena #1, how do I hate you? Let me count the ways..... 1) Okay, I can live with cheesecake most of the time. As a female comic book reader I kind of HAVE to but THIS.... Has the artist EVER visited a hospital in his life?! I can assure you hospital gowns DO NOT fit like this. Plus, panel after panel of naked butt shots for little other reason than to put a naked butt in the panel. 2) Plot holes you could drive a Mack truck through.... Let's see... we clearly see the doctor order a guard to stay on duty outside Athena's room. And yet, somehow, she manages to walk out. Even IF we want to cut a little slack and say "Okay, well, maybe the guard had to go to the bathroom or he was really sucky at his job and fell asleep" we've stiil got A WHOLE HOSPITAL FULL OF PEOPLE WHO ARE GOING TO LET A PATIENT WALK OUT (wearing the world's shortest, tightest hospital gown)?!?! And if THAT wasn't enough, said Athena is able to, somehow, WALK through the city (in the world's shortest, tightest hospital gown) without ANYONE noticing and maybe, I dunno, stopping her, asking if she's okay, CALLING THE FREAKING COPS?!?! 3) Leaps in logic....We meet Athena's supporting cast of fellow cops. WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE?! I mean, go back and look -- are ANY of these people given ACTUAL NAMES HERE?!?!?! And then, she's put in the 'undercover mission' -- um, helllloooo WHO is this 'bad guy' they're supposedly after? You will notice HE isn't named either. And, WHY are the police after him, hmmm? Is he a gun runner? Drug dealer? Pimp? WHAT?!?! We're never told. We're just told 'he's bad' (Mmkay?). And THEN Athena is supposed to be competing in some kind of 'American Idol' like competition? What, huh? Why? And, most of all, this requires her to wear a skimpy red minidress and thigh high red boots... WHY? 4) "Let's make you fabulous!" Umm, right, because Athena with her tight sweater, long, artfully mussed blonde hair, and perfect lips is just SUCH a dog that she needs a woman bursting in the door waving a makeup palatte around to make herself into something striking. Yeaahhh.... 5) Wimpiest cop EVER! Seriously, I know that TV and comic books like to make their characters seem more badass than usual. How many times have we seen heroes take a lickin' and keep on tickin' and we know that any NORMAL human would be in traction for a month over a beating like that. But THIS goes in the freakin' OPPOSITE direction! I mean, the art CLEARLY shows that bullet grazes Athena's arm and a would that would take a few hours to clean and stich closed suddenly leaves her "weak" and "resting" in the hospital for a couple of DAYS?! Geezus I've fallen off my BIKE and gotten worse scrapes than that!!! 6) And finally, there is the (unnamed) cop who is (I presume) going to end up being Athena's new partner... A man who is drawn as if he walked straight out of a "Jem and the Holograms" music video. Yes I WENT there!!! I will allow THIS and THIS much only. We DO learn the name of Athena's cop partner.... In the FLIP BOOK in the BACK in a story that is supposed to be taking place SEVERAL MONTHS AFTER THIS OPENING STORY ARC!!! Arrggghhhhh!!!! The SHEER stupidity here is just too much! Someone, ANYONE, Please tell me I'm NOT the only one to see how BADLY put together this comic is! Does it have potential? Wellll, maybe. But they're going to have to work a HELL of a lot harder to tighten up the story, plug the plot holes and quit with the pointless cheesecake before I'll willingly look at it again. There, I've ranted.

No worries Eric. Moonstone didn't have a panel at CCC so it's not like they could clarify things. It sounds like Dynamite is going to wait until Moonstone's license expires... Of course, that presumes that Moonstone WON'T be able to simply renew it when it does. Like I said, from what I've heard BOTH companies have the license and Dynamite COULD do a version if they wanted to. In other matters....Yeah, a lot of the old, Golden Age heroes are in public domain. As I understand it, the trick is that ANY comic book company can use these heroes and create versions of them but no comic book writer can do EXACTLY the same story with them as another. Alan Moore used a number of these old, Golden Age heroes in a "Tom Strong" story arc years back. In that the Green Lama was a ghost, Dynamite's version of the Green Lama controls nature, then there is an indie comic with a version that is more traditionally superhero-y. As long as the idie guy doesn't, all of a sudden, turn his version into a ghost or something then they're not infringing on copyright. Also, as long as each of the different authors is telling a different story it's okay.

You know, I'm not sure what kind of game Dynamite is playing when it comes to "The Phantom" because Moonstone AND writer Mike Bullock have stated that they have "The Ghost Who Walks" storylines going forward for more than the next year! King Features (which owns "The Phantom" among other heroes) simply sold BOTH companies licenses -- not something unheard of in the past although most modern comic book companies hate to do it these days because they don't like the competition. As far as I know, though, Moonstone's license isn't due to run out anytime "in the next few months" and, as I said before, Mike Bullock has stated that he has plans going forward into the next year. Not to mention the fact that Dynamite has stated their intention to have Alex Ross "redesign" the Phantom costume AND the talk of moving the character into "The urban jungle" (which, you know, has worked so bloody well when it's been tried in the past). You might as well try to take all the noir out of The Shadow and turn him into a 'hip, 21st century superhero who uses nanite technology to become invisible. (insert eye roll here). As for "The Lone Ranger"... as much as it is and was a beautiful comic and as much as I like the character, the story arcs just take too bloody long to tell and then, when you get done, you realize that not much has even happened!!!

As I understand it, there WAS a tentative schedule on a "Showcase Presents: The Suicide Squad" volume but the plug got pulled reportedly over the very generous reprint terms CEO Jeannette Kahn had instituted at DC at the time of the original stories. Essentially what I heard was that paying the required royalties would be almost guaranteed to make the edition a money loser no matter what. Still, it would be nice to see DC do the Suicide Squad some justice and do a multi-volume re-print in color. I like the Showcase volumes, don't get me wrong, but some stuff just deserves the royal treatment. Also, over on her You'll All Be Sorry MB's gail Simone just announced that, between auction and donations they have raised over $31,000 for Ostrander! AND they still have a TON of material for the online auction! This shouldn't discourage anyone who can to not donate or bid on stuff, however, because, remember, whatever is left over STILL goes to a good cause -- namely the Hero Intitiative.

At the auction they said that they have already raised something in the neighborhood of $15,000 on donations alone. And there was a LOT of stuff at the auction they couldn't get to so when they put it up online it's liable to fetch some nice prices. When I got there I found out that they DID charge $40 to attend (despite the fact that the WWC PROGRAM said it was free. Wizard REALLY needs to get their act together on that) BUT since I was doing press coverage they let me in for free. The real highlight of the evening was Ostrander himself. He truly seems like a warm, funny, lighthearted guy. I not only hope they raise money to cover his treatments, I hope the treatments continue to WORK. I'd hate to think of him going through all this; fighting so hard to keep his sight, only to lose it in the end.

The villain stands revealed, as does the true target of the attacks but will the Parr family live long enough to tell?
