After its launch in 20 new markets, Leonidas’ Spartans have proven themselves conquerors of box offices worldwide, bringing in about $48 million from about 5,000 screens in 33 territories.
300 performed best in the UK, where it took home $8.9 million off of 369 screenings. Second and third place belonged to Spain and France, respectively. In Russia, Zack Snyder’s war epic also broke the five million barrier, and with a gross of $5.6 million became the highest Warner Bros. opener ever.
While its international box office total currently stands at an impressive $79 million, the film is expected to keep on overpowering its competition over the next few weeks. According to Variety:
Given the appetite for action, a lack of rival action fare in coming weeks and the impressive holdover numbers so far for "300," Snyder's take on the Battle of Thermopylae could be headed for the same kind of worldwide box office success as "Troy," which took in almost $500 million -- with more than 70% of that coming from outside the U.S.; "300" launches next weekend in Brazil, followed by April 5 openings in Australia and Germany.
While it was beaten out of the top spot by the debuting TMNT in the US, 300 had no problems hanging on to second place, putting its total gross to $162.3 million only three weekends in. Its worldwide total stands at $241.4 million.
