Digital Webbing Press has announced a new one-shot in the fantasy tales genre, entitled Abigail & Rox, which will hit shops in July 2007.
Set in 1850s Victorian London, the one-shot tells the story of Abigail and her teddy bear, Rox, who become trapped in a book of fairy tales and are forced to explore a fantasy world at the brink of Armageddon.
"Another charming tale set in the land beyond The Looking Glass, Abigail & Rox should delight readers both young and old", said Mike Bullock writer of Lions, Tigers and Bears and The Gimoles .
The Abigail & Rox story is based on the famous tales Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass . With these stories as a backdrop, the comic book series will create a new, mysterious world known as the Land of Enchantment, inhabited by unique versions of the Queen of Spades, White Rabbit, the Jabberwocky and Cheshire cats.
Abigail & Rox creator and writer Joshua Gamon explained that the one-shot comic book sets the stage with "A doctor makes a midnight house call to an old friend’s estate outside London, and the sickly gentleman offers the physician payment in the form of an antiquated book of fairy tales, a relic that holds more within its pages than mere stories."
"Bound with a curse, the book is a gateway to a world of enchantment, filled with creatures both dangerous and beautiful, and once thought to be things of myth and wonder passed down by generations of storytellers. Unaware of its curse, the physician brings the enchanted book home to his granddaughter, Abigail, as a Christmas gift. But on Christmas Eve, as the doctor’s curiosity serves as his better, he peeks inside the book and vanishes. Now, Abigail and her teddy bear, Rox, explore a fantasy world at the brink of Armageddon to rescue her grandfather and to reunite the family once again."
Abigail & Rox is planned as a finite series that breaks down into three arcs: first the upcoming, self-contained one-shot, a second arc which showcases a war fought between the cloud giants and the surface dwellers; and lastly, a final act that cannot be disclosed at this time due to spoilers from the second arc.
All three story arcs focus on a single premise: How a girl’s love for her grandfather empowers her with the courage to never give up hope even when trapped within the heart of darkness.
A signature bonus of all Digital Webbing Press published comics, which will be included in the Abigail & Rox one-shot, are behind-the-scenes commentary on the making of the issue along with pin-ups, and a look at the evolution of the art from pencils to colors.
The Abigail & Rox story is written by Joshua Gamon, pencils, color and cover by Adrian Sibar (Batgirl, Planet of the Apes ), and letters by Ed Dukeshire.
Be sure to reserve your copy now of the Abigail & Rox one-shot (32 pages, full color cover and interiors) coming this July to your local comic shop.
