"You have a supernaturally-powered heroine programmed for evil instead using her powers to do good and take out the bad guys in an act of redemption. In essence: Lorelei is Buffy the Vampire Slayer with Angel’s internal character arc and guilt. Buffy as the vampire with a soul, if you will." So said reviewer Marc Mason in his column "Should It Be a Movie?" at MoviePoopShoot.com. Mason joins the growing list of reviewers and fans to express their enthusiasm for the flame-haired femme fatale, whose first graphic novel will be unleashed by publishing house Starwarp Concepts in July 2005.
LORELEI: BUILDING THE PERFECT BEAST, VOL. 1 is created and written by Steven A. Roman, best-selling author of the X-Men: The Chaos Engine trilogy of novels; his original horror novel, Final Destination: Dead Man’s Hand—based on the popular film franchise—will be released by BL Publishing in September 2005. Drawn by David C. Matthews, BUILDING THE PERFECT BEAST tells the story of Laurel O’Hara, a controversial photographer who, after a run-in with the supernatural, will become the succubus Lorelei, a supernatural predator who hunts for souls, not blood, to sate her unique appetite. A horror story with an emphasis on characterization, Volume 1 collects the first half of Lorelei’s origin, originally published between 1993 and 1995. Building the Perfect Beast, Vol. 2 is scheduled to follow in 2006.
Along with a never-before-published prologue with art by Kevin Tuma, LORELEI: BUILDING THE PERFECT BEAST, VOL. 1 also features an introduction by World Fantasy Award-winner Charles de Lint, author of Into the Green and Dreams Underfoot. Cover art is provided by Bob Larkin, whose work has appeared on covers for such properties as Tomb of Dracula, Doc Savage, Creepy, and the X-Men.
