Top Shelf has granted BF an exclusive preview of The Playwright, the latest graphic novel by Eddie Campbell and Daren White. Marked for a June release, the book is a dark comedy about the sex life of a celibate middle-aged man.
According to Top Shelf Publisher Christ Staros, The Playwright will only heighten Eddie Campbell’s status as one of the great comics contemporaries.
“Eddie Campbell is one of the great raconteurs of our industry, and one of the first to showcase comics as a great medium for autobiography,” Staros told BF. “In this giant tome, Eddie is able to brilliantly observe all the humor and pathos in life, while at the same time being a subjective participant in it. It is one of my favorite books, and might just be the best book coming out all year.”
“The Playwright is going to be a critical darling, and a sleeper that will slowly ignite by word of mouth. It’s the perfect analysis of the sexual tensions that drive men to ambition and paralyze them at the same time. It’s a lovely book about the sex life of a celibate middle-aged man.”
