Variety reports that Katsuhiro Otomo’s classic manga Akira may be getting a live-action Hollywood adaptation soon. Allen and Albert Hughes (From Hell, Dead Presidents), better know as the Hughes brothers, are in talks to direct the post-apocalyptic tale for Warner Bros. from a script written by Mark Fergus & Hawk Ostby and Gary Whitta.

Akira tells the tale of a teenage motorcycle gang thrust into a battle over the future of all humanity.

Otomo directed an Anime version of the tale in 1988, for the new live action version he is attached as an executive producer. The New film will relocate its cyber-punk setting from “Neo-Tokyo” to “New Manhattan”, hopefully not much else of the Japanese masterwork will be changed.
