Avengers assemble! While this should only be considered a rumor at this point, Deadline.com is reporting that Joss Whedon—creator of television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly—is in final negotiations to direct Marvel Studios’ The Avengers. The film, set for release in May 2012, will unite Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and other Marvel luminaries.
Whedon is no stranger to managing Marvel teams, having written the first 24 issues of Astonishing X-Men before handing the series off to Warren Ellis. Whedon also notably took the reins of Marvel’s Runaways after its creator Brian K. Vaughan left the series.
The Avengers would be Whedon’s second time in the director’s chair of a major motion picture. He previously directed Serenity, a big-screen continuation of his short-lived Firefly series on Fox.
