Actor Eric Johnson, best-known for his role as Whitney Fordman in Smallville, has been picked to star as Flash Gordon in the upcoming Sci Fi Channel TV series, The Hollywood Reporter  announced today.

Production on Flash Gordon, slated for a season of 22 episodes, will start on May 1 in Vancouver, with the first episode set to air in August.

Flash Gordon was created by cartoonist Alex Raymond in 1933 as a Sunday science fiction comic strip that was supposed to compete with Buck Rogers. The story featured Flash Gordon and fellow space companions Dale Arden and Dr. Hans Zarkov, who travelled into space with a rocket built by Zarkov only to strand on Mogo, a planet analogous to earth. Casting for the roles of Arden, Zarkov and other characters are still going on.

Since its creation, Flash Gordon has been featured in countless of comics series, films and television series based on Raymond’s strip. The property is now distributed internationally by King Features, who also hold the rights to characters like Popeye and The Phantom.
