For more than sixty years, Joe Kubert has mined artistic and storytelling gold in the comic book world. In a career that began when he was 11 years old, he has inspired readers and artists with his work on Hawkman, Tarzan, Enemy Ace, Sgt. Rock, Batman, and many others. Now he’s coming to the Baltimore Comic-Con.
Kubert will join the already dazzling guest line-up for the Baltimore Comic-Con which will be held September 8-9, 2007 at the Baltimore Convention Center. Joe Kubert will be a special guest of the Hero Initiative and he will support the Hero Initiative’s fundraising efforts at the show.
In addition to his highly regarded work in comic books, Kubert is known for founding The Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art in 1976. Since then, Kubert and fellow professionals have imparted the ins and outs of comic art and the business to students who have gone on to become some of the most influential creators working in the field. The Joe Kubert School will also be meeting people and distributing information at the Baltimore Comic-Con.
Kubert’s work has also appeared in the New York Daily News, The Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, as well as in syndicated strips and graphic novels such as the award-winning Fax From Sarajevo.
"In an age when hyperbole is the standard discourse, it’s difficult to do justice in describing the contributions to the comic book arts made by Joe Kubert. The term ‘living legend’ is overused, but it certainly comes as close to anything describing him and what he has done for comic fans, comic books themselves, and the people who create them," said Marc Nathan, the show’s promoter. "We are extremely pleased to have him at our show."
Joe Kubert joins such notable comic creators as Mike Mignola (Hellboy, BPRD), Jim Lee (Batman, Wildcats), David Finch (Moon Knight, New Avengers), John Romita, Sr. (Amazing Spider-Man, sponsored by the Hero Initiative), and Al Feldstein (former editor of MAD) among the show’s many guests.
DC Comics, Gemstone Publishing, Image Comics, Insight Studios Group, Top Cow Productions, Top Shelf, and the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund will also be exhibiting at the show.
The show will host the Harvey Awards for the second time. Kyle Baker will return as the Master of Ceremonies for the Harvey Awards dinner for a second year. The ceremony will be held Saturday night, September 8.
