The original art board for the cover of Marvel Comics’ historic New Avengers & Fantastic Four Comic saluting the men and woman of the US Military will be among the key items featured in the “Orange County Choppers Support Our Troops” auction to be held on Friday, May 6, 2005 at 6:30PM at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum on Manhattan’s West Side. Guernsey’s, the auction house known as a leader in bringing the unprecedented and unique to sale, will be conducting the auction.
Produced by Marvel Comics as part of the “America Supports You”, the “Salute Our Troops” project – in which one million copies are currently being distributed free exclusively to soldiers throughout the world – has received extensive national media attention, featured in USA Today, New York Times, Washington Post, US News & World Report among other prominent print and television outlets.
The cover by top comic industry illustrator Dan Jurgens features the American flag as a background element. In the stripes we see the faces of American soldiers. In the foreground we see Captain America and various other Marvel Super Heroes including Spider-Man, Wolverine, Spider-Woman, Luke Cage, and Iron Man saluting.
The proceeds from the auction will be directed towards the families of our troops who have been seriously wounded or killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. More specifically, the charities are the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, which provides unrestricted grants for the families of soldiers recently killed in action, and the Fisher House Foundation, a home away from home for families of seriously wounded soldiers being treated in military hospitals. The auction will be held on the deck of the Intrepid, the venerable former aircraft carrier turned museum that is berthed on the mighty Hudson River.
Auction previews will be held on Wednesday, May 4, Thursday, May 5, and Friday, May 6, 2005 from 10AM to 5PM at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum [12th Avenue at 46th Street]. The auction is open to the public, for those who cannot attend, eBay Live Auctions will provide Internet bidding.
