The biggest news of Comic Con International in San Diego was revealed moments ago and jaws are still on the floor—the world-renowned super hero Marvelman is now part of the Marvel Comics family! Marvel Comics has purchased the rights to Marvelman from creator Mick Anglo and his representatives, finding a home for one of the most sought after heroes in graphic fiction!

“It is an honor to work with Mick Anglo to bring his creation to a larger audience than ever before,” said Dan Buckley, CEO & Publisher, Print, Animation & Digital Media, Marvel Entertainment Inc. “Fans are in for something special as they discover just what makes Marvelman such an important character in comic book history.”

Originally created in 1954 by Mick Anglo and appearing in some of the most celebrated comic stories of all time, Marvelman is Micky Moran, a young reporter gifted with the power to save the world by simply uttering the word “kimota”!

“I did not think it would ever happen,” said Mick Anglo. “It's a wonderful thing to see my creation finally back.”

    is this ALL the Miraclemen (by Gaiman and such...the dark years so to say) also?

    Good question. Are they just doing new material or reprinting the older stuff too? Have all the legal issues been sorted out? I've read very little Miracle/Marvelman but this is an intriguing development, no doubt.

    I'm a little skeptical on this...after re-reading the press release, the implied tone I'm getting is that this is mostly about new adventures of Marvelman...but won't he almost be filling the same role as Sentry then? I'm hopeful for some reprint material however...I've heard and read so much about the character, but only actually been able to read one issue (the childbirth issue - a mangled old copy I found at a garage sale).

    Good point about the Sentry, Fletch. I was reading about Moore's first issue where an aging married Mike Moran dreams he can fly. It sounded A LOT like the Sentry. I am curious whether Marvel intends Marvelman to be part of their universe or in his own continuity.

    My understanding of all this at this point is as follows. Marvel owns MARVEL MAN, the 60's brit hero that was sued for being similar to Captain Marvel. They will be reprinting the original run of the character as well as new stories featuring the character.
    The long legal battle over the Moore/Gaiman stuff has not been resolved. However, Quesada had been talking to Buckingham and Gaiman which would imply that they are fairly far along the way in resolving that nightmare. It is safe to assume that Marvel did not buy these rights with out significant leg work in securing the modern stuff as well, because lets face it, without the Moore/Gaiman stuff, let's face it, this is a useless property.
    So, we go back to the dubious state of the rights of the classic Modern run and are left wondering what is going on. Clearly we are no further along than we were before SDCC.
    It is hope though and that is always a good thing, no matter what my inner cynic tells me.
