This week, David Schwartz and Sean Wang's two issue mini-series MELTDOWN, coming soon from Image Comics, was featured on the cover of the Miami Herald, one of the country's largest newspapers. With a daily readership of over 1 million people, it is unprecedented exposure for a debut independent title.
The Herald reported: "The 35-year-old Miami natives [MELTDOWN creators David Schwartz and Sean Wang] have followed their childhood dreams into a second career producing Meltdown, a highly anticipated comic book about a superhero called The Flare. But Meltdown...doesn't just fulfill the dream of two young men with good imaginations. It also breaks tradition with most successful comic book franchises, which set the scenes of their adventures mostly in New York -- aka Gotham or Metropolis -- or Los Angeles."
'It only makes sense to base a good portion of the story in South Florida, because it is where we grew up and it is the place that inspired us. And if you can't draw enough inspiration from your hometown, then where can you get it?' Schwartz said."
And for all of you non-Miami folks, keep in mind that the reviews for MELTDOWN have been stellar. Comic Buyer’s Guide made it their Pick of the Month with 4 out of 4 stars, SilverBulletComicBooks.com gave it 5 out of 5 bullets, their highest rating and ComicCritique.com gave it
5 out of 5 stars.
"It's still settling in," says MELTDOWN's writer David Schwartz.
"First, all of the attention MELTDOWN has been getting in the comic book community, and now over a million people in our hometown just got a glimpse of our creation? It's amazing."
And MELTDOWN hasn't even hit the stands yet. Look for it in shops around the country on December 6th, 2006.
MELTDOWN is a two-issue prestige-format mini-series. Each issue of this full-color series will retail for $5.99 and issue 1 is scheduled to be in stores on December 6th, 2006.
