The wait for Shrek’s third adventure to hit the silver screen is almost ogre, but DreamWorks Animation has already started the wheels on a Shrek 4. The studio has begun negotiations with Mike Mitchell to direct said fourth feature.
The announcement of the franchise’s continuation comes as no surprise, seeing how much of a moneymaker it has been for the animation studio. The first two Shrek films tallied an international gross of $484.4 and $920.7 million respectively.
The screenplay for Shrek 4, said to pick up where the third installment ends, is being scripted by Tim Sullivan, with a rewrite recently having been handed in by Josh Klausner.
Potential director Mitchell’s previous credits include Sky High, Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo, and the award-winning animation short Herd. Jeffrey Katzenberg, Bill Damaschke, Kristine Belson and Chris Kuser are overseeing are overseeing the project for DreamWorks. Producers have yet to be named.
This summer’s animated feature sees Shrek being heralded as the heir of Far, Far Away when his father-in-law King Harold becomes ill. Having no desire whatsoever to leave his swamp behind, Shrek involves Donkey and Puss in Boots in a plot to make the rebellious Artie the new ruler of the country. Meanwhile, Princess Fiona and her girlfriends must thwart an attempted coup by the embittered Prince Charming.
Shrek The Third is directed by Chris Miller and stars the voices of Mike Myers (Shrek), Eddie Murphy (Donkey), Cameron Diaz (Princess Fiona), and Antonio Banderas (Puss In Boots). It hits theatres in 10 days on May 18.
