Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery rings in the New Year with an exciting show of new cartooning talent in MOME: The New Guard. Based on the essential quarterly anthology edited by Gary Groth and Eric Reynolds, the exhibition showcases stimulating new approaches to the conventions of narrative art. Time magazine reports, “Where most anthologies have, at best, a 50/50 hit/miss ratio, MOME manages all-hit, don’t miss.” Discover why at this don’t miss exhibition opening Saturday, January 6, 2007 at Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery, located at 1201 S. Vale Street in Seattle’s lively Georgetown neighborhood.
MOME: The New Guard offers a diverse group of exciting young artists from across the county and around the globe. Among the exhibiting artists is Sophie Crumb, expatriate daughter of legendary cartoonists Robert and Aline, currently residing in the south of France. Also showing is multi-talented Zak Sally, who in addition to his prolific cartooning gained notoriety with his alternative rock band Low. Los Angeles artist Tim Hensley also has a background in music. His father plays piano in Neil Diamond’s band, and Hensley once composed a soundtrack to Daniel Clowes’ graphic novel Like a Velvet Glove Cast in Iron. Similarly, Jeffrey Brown recently animated a video for successful Seattle rock band Death Cab for Cutie. Others contributing recent work to the exhibition include Andrice Arp, Gabrielle Bell, Jonathan Bennett, Martin Cendreda, David Heatley, Paul Hornschemeier, R. Kikuo Johnson, Anders Nilsen, John Pham and Kurt Wolfgang.

This exhibition is organized by Gary Groth and Eric Reynolds. Groth is founder and co-publisher of Fantagraphics Books and editor of many prestigious publications including The Comics Journal. In addition to his editorial work on MOME and The Complete Crumb Comics, Reynolds serves as Director of Publicity, Marketing and Promotions for Fantagraphics Books. Reynolds is also a published cartoonist and performing rock musician.
MOME: The New Guard opens with a festive reception on Saturday, January 6 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. The editors and selected artists will be present to sign copies of the newly published Winter 2007 issue. DJ David James will spin eclectic esoteric tunes, and admission, as always, is free. In its infancy, Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery has attracted large, enthusiastic audiences from throughout the region. The exhibition continues through January 31, 2007. A selection of images in a variety of formats is available for publication.
