Grant Morrison has been hired to write the screenplay for Paramount’s adaptation of the Area 51  video game franchise.

The game is a first-person shooter released by Midway Games in 2005, is set in the US government’s top secret military facility, Area 51, where a small Special Forces unit led by Ethan Cole has to investigate a mysterious viral outbreak that has shut down the facility completely. Once inside, they stumble upon an ancient alien colony that had been buried beneath Area 51 for centuries.

A sequel to the original game will be released this summer, titled Blacksite: Area 51.

Morrison himself is no stranger to Hollywood, as his DC/Vertigo story We3 is currently in development at New Line Cinema.
