Preacher, the hit comics series by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon that put DC’s Vertigo imprint on the map, will be adapted as a TV series on HBO according to the Hollywood Reporter.
For some time now, Preacher had been rumored to go in production both as a movie and a television series. A theatrical version, with Kevin Smith's View Askew and James Marsden (who starred as Cyclops in the X-Men movies and Richard White in Superman Returns) attached for production and the lead role, got to the casting stage, but things reached a halt from there.
Now, pay cable network HBO has decided to bring Preacher to the small screen and has billed Daredevil and Ghost Rider director Mark Steven Johnson to write the pilot, with his Grumpier Old Men collaborator Howard Deutch on board as director. Both will serve as executive producers alongside Michael De Luca, George Agusto, Chris Bender and JC Spink.
Within the comics industry, Preacher still stands as one of the most influential mature readers titles to date and, along with Neil Gaiman’s Sandman, lifted DC’s Vertigo imprint to new, respectable heights. The series, spanning 66 issues from April 1995 to October 2000, was created by UK creators Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, with Glenn Fabry providing some of the most breathtaking (read: shocking) covers to ever grace a comic. Ennis and Dillon will serve as co-executive producers.
