The ongoing dispute between DC Comics/Time Warner and the heirs of Superman co-creator, Jerry Siegel, reached a landmark turning point this week, as a federal judge ruled they were entitled to reclaim their share of the U. S. copyright to the character. The ruling specifically upheld the Siegels’ copyright to the Superman story published in Action Comics#1.
As reported by the New York Times, the ruling leaves intact Time Warner’s international rights to the Man of Steel. The decision leaves open the complicated process of determining how much the company may owe the Siegel heirs for use of the character since 1999, and from what sources these profits are derived from.
The Times continues that Time Warner plans to challenge the decision, which, if upheld, could potentially lead to a similar challenge by the heirs of Joe Shuster in 2013.
