Transfuzion Publishing continues its expansion into all new graphic novels with Ferrymen, a graphic tale by Aleister Gilgrim set for release in March, 2009.
From the creator of Slave Labor’s The Cemeterians, Aleister Gilgrim is a character designer and concept designer for Disney Publishing’s “Disney English” Project. In Ferrymen, the original graphic novel tells the story of a recently deceased girl who is transported to the after-life. She quickly discovers that the after-life is nothing compared to what she expected and is briskly swept up in a twisted plot of intrigue, deception and danger between the Dead Realms.
Publisher Gary Reed said that when he envisioned Transfuzion moving to all new material, Ferrymen was a perfect fit. “I wanted to make sure we had complete stories and that there was a sense of self containment. I think far too often, the term graphic novel focuses more on the graphic or illustrated part…I wanted to ensure that it was also on the novel part. Ferrymen is not only a complete story, illustrated, but also very good. That’s a great combination.”
Ferrymen is a story of action, intrigue, and philosophical examinations. Dorothy, a Newlydead soul, who recently deceased, is transported to an after-life she never expected. Without any memory of her prior mortal life, she wanders through the Dead Realm of Purgatory meeting rulers and monsters alike. Among those she meets are the Ferrymen of the Styx Tunnels., specifically assigned to the protection and trafficking of Newlydead souls to find their final home in Heaven or Hell.
Lurking in the tunnels are Lost Souls---terrible, hungry, relentless creatures who want nothing but to destroy everything they come in contact with . Soon, Dorothy discovers that it is not this danger alone that threatens her as she is quickly wrapped up in a twisted plot of intrigue, deception, and danger between the Dead Realms---one that will decide the fate of Heaven, Hell, and Purgatory themselves.
Creator Aleister Gilgrim explains his inspiration for Ferrymen, “Originally the idea came from spending time in Moscow and riding the old wooden metro system. The cars are really old, decrepit, and at the same time beautiful, it's like taking the tube from another dimension. That got me started thinking about monsters and escorting people in an old other-wordly-tube system.”
The graphic novel grew from a short story that appeared in Rising Stars of Manga and Gilgrim expanded it to the 160 page graphic novel. The book retails for $18.99.
Ferrymen will ship in March, 2009. It is available to order from DIAMOND PREVIEWS (page 296), Order # JAN10 1115 and also will be available from online sites such as Amazon. (ISBN 978-0-941613-38-5)
