Spider-Man 3 has gone on to set various kinds of records in each of the eight Asian markets where the film premiered yesterday.
The Sam Raimi-directed pic also debuted in several European and African countries—Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Egypt—though no numbers were available at press time. Sony will issue a report, as well an estimated first-day international gross today.
In Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines, Sony’s much-anticipated movie became the biggest opening day of all time, and in Taiwan, it drew the biggest crowd ever to see a movie opening on a weekday.
"In the eight Asian markets where we opened May 1, in every single one of them we beat Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2, " Sony Pictures Entertainment vice chairman Jeff Blake told The Hollywood Reporter. "And we set records in almost all of them."
Today sees the release in eight more countries, with another thirty on both Thursday (including Australia, China and Russia) and Friday (including the U.K. and India)
Spider-Man 3 will debut in the US on 4,243 screens this Friday, making it the widest domestic opening of all time. Select theatres will offer midnight screenings of the film.
