Spiderman just got new secret identity. According to Variety, Sony has announced that L.A.-born and UK-based actor Andrew Garfield is set to play the role of the webslinger in the upcoming 3-D reboot of the Spiderman franchise. Garfield, a virtual unknown, was a co-star in last year's The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus and appeared in an episode of Doctor Who. The 26 year old actor will also star in the upcoming David Fincher film The Social Network, which will hit theaters this October.

This will be the first new Spiderman film after Tobey Maguire and Sam Rami left the series earlier this year. The film will be directed by Marc Webb (no pun intended) and is set for a July 3, 2012 release. Production begins this December.

"Though his name may be new to many, those who know this young actor's work understand his extraordinary talents," Webb said. "He has a rare combination of intelligence, wit, and humanity. Mark my words, you will love Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker."
