"SuperFogeys," the web comic chronicling the misadventures of superheroes in a nursing home, has been picked up by Th3rd World Studios (www.th3rdworld.com). The comic will be added into Th3rd World's weekly lineup and a new strip will debut every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.
"SuperFogeys immediately appealed to us both conceptually and artistically," Michael DeVito, co-founder of Th3rd World Studios said. "There is a wealth of web comics out there, but finding quality ones is rare, so when we spotted this it just seemed like a no-brainer. The concept is very original and anyone who reads the actual strips, whether a fan of the superhero genre or not, should enjoy it and get a few laughs."
The most famous SuperFogey is Captain Spectacular. He's a legend, firmly established, who now feels like his reward is to kick back and take it easy at Valhalla-Home for the Supertired. In the very first strip (http://www.th3rdworld.com/superfogeys.php), Captain Spectacular and his arch-nemesis Dr. Rocket are defeated by a nurse with a cup of ensure.
"In the first arc we see Captain Spectacular's ex-girlfriend, Spy Gal, come to Valhalla and she's all about spit, vinegar and female empowerment, "SuperFogeys Creator Brock Heasley said." Rounding out the main cast is Swifty, the aging, walker-bound speedster who serves as the resident grump."
Heasley, a happily married native of Fresno, California and father of two, got in contact with the Maryland-based Th3rd World Studios through Comicspace.
"I recently joined Comicspace (a community for comic writers, artists, publishers, fans, etc) and happened across Brock's profile on the homepage. I added him as a contact and that got us talking," DeVito said. "I spotted SuperFogeys and couldn't stop reading. I sent it over to the team and they were pretty unanimous in saying we should go after it before someone else snatches it up."
To promote the Th3rdWorld Studios' launch of "SuperFogeys," a weekly trivia contest is being held. The questions (and answers) will be taken directly from recently posted strips. Winners receive an original SuperFogeys sketch signed and mailed to them by Heasley. More info about the contest can be found on the Th3rd World Studios site.
"What impresses me about Th3rd World the most is their severe dedication to each one of the properties under their wing," Heasley said. "I really like that they're hands-on and almost more excited about the SuperFogeys and its future than I am! Plus, they're just a professional group that knows what they're doing and have a killer website to back that up."
Th3rd World also hosts the web comic "Eskimo Dave" (http://www.th3rdworld.com/eskimo_dave.php) which follows Eskimo Dave and his traveling companion, Steve the polar bear, through a series of adventures and misadventures as they attempt to save their village from the destructive forces of evil.
Also on the Th3rd World site is "The Rant Aisle" (http://www.th3rdworld.com/blog/) a weekly entertainment column by Justin "Captain Supermarket" Robinson. His pieces are packed with pop culture references with everything from features on local bands to detailed looks at upcoming films.
"I've found there are two kinds of people in this world: those who love the SuperFogeys and those who haven't read it," Heasley said. "I'm so excited about what's ahead for the SuperFogeys and I think people are really going to find a lot to love as it moves forward. There's a real, definite long-term plan for the SuperFogeys story with twists, surprises and revelations."
