Critically-acclaimed writer and artist Sean Wang will be returning to THE TICK comic series for two special issues this Spring to help celebrate the character’s milestone 20th anniversary. Hot off the success of MELTDOWN and prior to resuming work on RUNNERS, Wang will be contributing to the wildly popular character’s anniversary with a short story in the star-studded celebration issue, THE TICK 20TH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL EDITION #1, published by New England Comics. Wang will also be writing and illustrating a full length one-shot, THE TICK COMIC CON EXTRAVAGANZA #1.
“Most people know me from my sci-fi adventure series RUNNERS, which is about a motley crew of alien smugglers,” says Wang. “And recently, more people have discovered my work through MELTDOWN, a superhero story published by Image Comics earlier this year. But what a lot of people don’t realize is that I actually got my start in the comics industry writing and drawing for THE TICK with the six-issue TICK AND ARTHUR series and a number of seasonal specials.”
“I always had a ball with the Tick universe,” continues Wang, “so when the 20th anniversary event came up, I jumped at the chance to be involved. I’m extremely excited to be a part of the Anniversary special, especially given the caliber of talent contributing to that book. And Ben Edlund, the Tick creator himself, will be doing something for the issue, which is a very momentous occasion for Tick fans everywhere!”
While contributing a short story to the Anniversary Special, Wang is also excited about his full-length special, THE TICK COMIC CON EXTRAVAGANZA #1, in which the Tick and Arthur are invited to be special guests at a comic convention. There the Tick is besieged by fans as well as a TV producer who already has a pro wrestler named “The Gun Show” lined up to play The Tick on TV. With all attention on the Tick, his envious superhero teammates contemplate kicking him out of the group, but to do that, they’ll have to convince Arthur to turn on his partner!
“I’d guess that most comic fans have been to at least one comic convention, “ explains Wang, “so they know that there’s just something inherently funny about those shows. And it seemed like a perfect setting for a Tick story, given the absurdist nature of the series. I think anyone who enjoys The Tick, comic conventions, and catastrophic fist-fights with professional wrestlers will get a kick out of the COMIC CON special.”
THE TICK COMIC CON EXTRAVAGANZA #1 is available for pre-order now in the April 2007 issue PREVIEWS and will be in stores June 2007. THE TICK 20TH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL EDITION #1 ships April 2007.
