It is no understatement to say that the illustrations of Steve McNiven are unrivaled in their ability to sing the virtues of the superhero genre, as he proved in 2009 on Marvel's Wolverine: Old Man Logan story arc. McNiven’s lines convey a depth of detail unparalleled in Marvel’s already talented bullpen of artists, and for that there is no one more deserving of the “Best Mainstream Artist” award.

It would seem a daunting task to have a recognizable hand on the page noticed only as “very good,” but that is how McNiven’s work always appears: very good. He doesn’t need to style himself with a certain visual fashion or technique. What McNiven channels in his illustrations is honesty, an honesty that conveys the wild adventure and enduring fun of superhero comics, while also showing an admirable level of detail and purity in not only the characters he puts to the page, but the emotions he fills them with.
With McNiven’s hand guiding us, we all see the triumphs and the failures of the Marvel ensemble that has lived for decades. Because of talent like his, we’re able to not only read and see the adventure, but also join in with it.
