Welcome to our second edition of Indie Spotlight! For this week’s I.S., The Mighty Ten Questions were answered by innocentboy, creator of Song of Songs. Please visit innocentboy’s site and give his book a shot!

The Mighty 10 Questions!

1. Who are you and what is your book?

I be the incredible innocentboy and my book is Song of Songs, the Comic Book available in hi and low rez at www.songofsongsthecomicbook.com.

2. What’s your book about? Can you compare it to any other books out right now?

QUESTION: What do you do when you go to a rave and your girl is kidnapped?
ANSWER: You go and rescue her.
That's pretty much the lead in, for the rest you'll have to wait and enjoy the ride. What books can I compare it to? Well, I've never read Violent Messiahs, but the title alone gets me to pick it up off the shelf and flip through it every now and then. Throw in a little of the Ultimates secret organization stuff, some characters you'd likely see hanging around with that hot ass Kiden Nixon from Marvel's NYX, the honest love thoughts of Tim Sale and Jeff Loeb's Yellow, Blue, Grey mini's, and the raw thuggery of Sym from the X-Inferno saga and you've just skratched the surface of how deep Song of Songs the Comic Book will go.

3. Who are some of your major influences?

Comic wise, no doubt I'd say the artists around the start of the Image era. I was a McFarlane kid. Then you got endless names of other artists, writers, emcees, graf artists etc.

4. What inspires you?

Guilt. Artists have the power to change the world and I feel guilty every millisecond that I'm not trying to change the world and make it a better place. The world isn't gonna get better on its own and I can't just sit around and do nothing while it goes to hell.

5. Would you ever like your book to be mainstream, or are you pleased with where it is?

I am pleased with what I've achieved but I don't think I ever wanna be satisfied. If you get satisfied, you tend to get lazy and fall off, happens all the time. Granted, I don't need to be the only person in the game 'cause there is room for more then 1 creator in the spotlight, but yeah, just keep going and don't let yourself be stopped. I would like to do this for a living as a career.

6. Do you aspire to make it into the mainstream? For instance, if you were offered a job at Marvel or DC would you take it?

Right now, since I've only begun, only time will tell if Song of Songs the Comic Book will be a hit or a miss. Ideally, whether Song of Songs the Comic Book is either a hit or a miss, I'd like to have a career in the big 2 or 3 or 4 like Arthur Adams, or Simon Bisley or people like that. You know, mini-series or 1 shot here and there out of love for comics and the rest of my time dedicated to my own indie project out of love for creation.

7. Do you aspire to stay in comics? Or do you just want to tell a few stories and be done with the medium?

Forever, no doubt about it. Drawing comics has been what I've wanted to do for a living ever since like grade 2 or something. I mean, you know when you're young and people were like, "what you wanna be when you grow up?" ... it was always awkward 'cause I always wanted to make comics but all the other kids would be like, "I don't know.” That never really made sense to me. I mean, I like comics, and I like to draw and there was my answer right there. Didn't the other kids like to do anything?

8. Do you have any other projects lined up?

I often get offered for various freelance jobs that either go through or don't for various reasons. But right now, I'm pretty focused. Not to say that I'm not open because I am, but ... but ... enh, it's a sort of hard answer to word properly. Just forget this question was ever answered I guess.

9. What books are you into right now?

Daredevil, Powers, Astonishing X-Men, NYX, Runaways, Kabuki, Mary Jane, the Ultimates, Venom, Spectacular Spidey, Ultimate X-Men ... man, that's just the ... there's just too many dope ass books out there that I couldn't possibly even try to name them all.

10. Where can folks go to see more of your work and purchase your comics?

Free hi-resolution jpgs are available in the free stuff section at www.songofsongsthecomicbook.com for now. Just download and print at home or take to a shop to print for you. Pages are released as they're completed. And if you're lucky, there is a way to get them offline that I'm not really going into right now. It has been going on for a while, but I'll let that get out on its own instead of bigging it up myself.
And lastly, thank you, Broken Frontier for this opportunity provided to all of us indie creators. Thank you to everybody that has shown support thus far, and thank you to everybody that will be showing support in the future as Song of Songs the Comic Book progresses.

Bonus Questions!

I’ve known you from the Bendis Message Board and I’ve been checking out your work for a while now. I’ve noticed you are very musically influenced and I’ve got to ask, what are your top 5 favorite recording artists, in any order?

Top 5 musicians? It’s always, always changing and bringing it down to just 5 is definitely hard, but I’ll have to say Gang Starr, EL-P and the whole Definitive Jux camp, Circle Research, L*Roneous and a heart felt rest in peace going out to Ol' Dirty Bastard.

Some of your pages have TONS of stuff going on in them. How long does it usually take you to pencil a page?

As for penciling, it really depends on the page but 3 days would be a safe average still.

Well thank you innocentboy for responding to the call for indie creators. Here at Broken Frontier we wish you a world of success. And don’t forget gang, we’re always taking submissions from indie creators. Just copy these questions and send the answers to J.P. at JPDorigo@brokenfrontier.com .
