Saturday, March 13. Lone Star Comics, Hurst, Tx.
This was to be my 4th or 5th signing at a Lone Star store (they have 8 locations in the DFW metroplex total), and so far my experiences there have been varied. A couple of the signings yielded only one or two people showing up (even at the store I shop at!) while my signing at the Mesquite location had a great turnout.
For the Hurst signing, the Viper crew was in full effect, with Jessie (president), Jim (art director), Greg (productions director and letterer) and myself all in attendance. For the first 20 minutes, there was a rush of activity...I couldn't sign fast enough. One of the highlights was a girl who brought in a piece of fan art she had done and wanted me to sign it. It made my day!
The remaining hour and 40 minutes were dead....no one else showed up. But the time was not wasted...I had a good time hanging with the guys from Viper. We were able to talk a little about future endeavors and reminisce about how far the company and Dead@17 has come this past year.
I appreciate the crew of Lone Star having me out once again, despite the unpredictable turnouts. Thanks guys!
Saturday, Feb 28. First Federal Comics, Austin, Tx.
I made the four hour trip from Dallas To Austin with Viper President Jessie Garza. This was to be my first signing since the release of all 4 issues of Dead@17, and I was eager to hear what people thought of the series as a whole. As with any signing or appearance, especially with a relatively unknown creator such as myself, one never knows what to expect as far as fan turnout. Sometimes people are lining up to speak with you, and other times you're sitting alone in a dark corner, and the only person that approaches you is looking for the bathroom.
Luckily, this time it was the former, and it turned out to be one of my better appearances to date. From 1 until 4, there remained a steady flow of traffic, many people picking up multiple sets of the series, others just wanting a quick sketch. Everyone I met was kind and engaging....time just flew by. I hated to leave when it was over, I had a really great time interacting with the fans. The guys at First Federal were genuine and very supportive...just all around great guys. I can't thank them enough!
PS: Check out the Juice Up The Dead contest here at Broken Frontier if you want to win a bunch of Dead@17 goodies!
Next Saturday, March 20...Madness Comics, Plano, Tx...
