I spent the last couple days catching up with Last Blood. Though the story has taken a few convoluted twists as of late, I’m really itching to see how the webcomic shapes up as a whole.

With that I mind, I re-discovered one of my favorite webcomics, The Zombie Hunters, is still alive and kicking. I first saw this comic come alive during my first foray into webcomics about a year ago, but thought it had bitten the big one after a lack of updates. I see today it has risen from the grave with a hearty thirst for blood and taken quite a bite out of the list of Top Webcomics.

The Zombie Hunters is, you guessed it, about people who hunt zombies. In an opposite direction from Last Blood, the Zombie Hunters is a great deal more character-based, (though the prior webcomic isn’t slacking in that department either). The Zombie Hunters ' non-linear plot is often very loose, allowing the characters further freedom to move around, interact, and yes, kill lots and lots of zombies.

From the creepy and cryptic Cell-like behavior of the zombies to the 1930’s Disney propaganda-style Public Service Announcement, The Zombie Hunters has plenty of originality. But this doesn’t interfere with getting to know, and care for, the characters. Creators Jenny Romanchuk and Katie McWilliams have done a wonderful job creating a site and strip which has it all : a funny FAQ, a cast page, and a wildly interesting cast to populate the pages with.

The only disparaging part is one of the creators saying “I hate basing stuff off other stuff, its not how I roll.” Unfortunately that’s virtually impossible in any genre, least of all the brain-munching zombie one. Thus, while Last Blood is laden with references to the works and masters of the horror genre, The Zombie Hunters strives to be more completely original  and does a pretty good job so far. But given the massive amount of source material with names ranging from Romero to Raimi, some overlap just has to be expected. My message to all Zombie Hunters out there: don’t worry about total originality – you’re already exerting more creativity in the genre than shown on the big screen for the past year!

In other news, Wizard has posted an interview with Eisner-nominated webcomic creator Cameron Stewart of Sin Titulo.
