#MeettheArtist – it’s been a popular meme over January on social media and we thought it might be fun to compile a handful of these visual resumes in one place here at Broken Frontier. Below we present a number of those images as some of our favourite small press creators (from across our ‘Six to Watch‘ programmes and beyond) inventively introduce themselves to a whole new audience.
The idea on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and so on is that these illustrations should speak for themselves. But in the interests of wider promotion we’ve provided some links and a short bio so you can investigate each artist further!
Alice was one of our original Broken Frontier ‘Six Small Press Creators to Watch’ and a contributor the Broken Frontier Small Press Yearbook. She’s part of the Comic Book Slumber Party team whose latest book Deep Space Canine has just been published by Avery Hill.
Anja is one of this year’s Broken Frontier ‘Six to Watch’ creators. Her comics and zines are rooted in delicate and dark fantasy. Anja’s self-published What is ‘Home’? was one of my ‘Ten UK Small Press Comics You Need to Own!‘ for 2016.
Another of our original ‘Six to Watch’, Danny is the artist behind the slapstick drunken antics of Was it… Too Much for You? and was a Breakout Talent nominee in the Broken Frontier Awards for 2015. She’s also the illustrator of Adrian Edmondson’s children’s book Tilly and the Time Machine published by Puffin this year.
Emily Rose Lambert
Emily is part of the Big Brown Eyes Collective and a 2016 BF ‘Six to Watch’ artist. She was also part of last year’s Thought Bubble Anthology Collection published by Image Comics.
Jess was one of our first ‘Six to Watch’ and has contributed to many UK comics anthologies including Dirty Rotten Comics, Greasy’s Guide to Nookie and Identity. She has self-published comics like Red and is currently working on her webcomic The Flying Ship.
A 2016 BF ‘Six to Watch’-er Jey is the co-creator of the popular webcomic HeLL(P) with C.Vintner. Jey is also a frequent contributor to Dirty Rotten Comics and was the cover artist of the most recent issue.
One of this year’s ‘Six to Watch’ Josh is the artist behind the acclaimed small press hit Glorious Wrestling Alliance. His comics have been seen in anthologies like Off Life and Dirty Rotten Comics.
Kate-mia White’s intricately illustrated A Dark Forest has been drawing readers in with its brooding gothic atmosphere over the last couple of years. Kate-mia is also one of our 2017 ‘Six to Watch’ artists.
Rachael Smith is a double British Comic Award-nominated artist whose most recent full-length graphic novel Artificial Flowers was published last year by Avery Hill Publishing. Her recent Wired Up Wrong comic has garnered huge critical acclaim for its accessible approach to mental health issues and she is also a contributor to Titan’s Doctor Who comics.
