In a surprise turn of events Washington, D.C. is attacked not by terrorists but by the Amazons in a full out war against the United States.

One of my favorite writers has been handed the reigns to bring us a six issue series in which the Amazons have decided to attack the United States. Of course this is done in retaliation of having Princess Diana standing trial for killing Max Lord, and in doing so, plenty of surprises abound in the opening issues.

I won’t give away the ending since it’s a major spoiler, but the arrival of a long lost heroine will surely implicate greatly upon the life of Wonder Woman. I am sure though this will allow plenty of fodder for incoming writer Gail Simone on the Wonder Woman title in the months to come. In the meantime though, consider the set up for this issue as a myriad of plot threads reveals a trio of Amazon warriors invading the White House. Luckily enough, Black Lightning arrives on the scene to make the save. Also arriving on the scene is the scheming Circe who’s seen lurking about and that’s coupled with a mischievous double replacing a kidnapped Sarge Steel. The plot does indeed thicken.

There certainly seems like enough action emanating throughout these pages, and much of the build-up is interesting for my tastes. I have always liked Will Pfeifer as a writer and it’s nice to see his talents being utilized expertly on this six issue series. The plotting was sound and the opening bit with a father and son gazing upon the Lincoln Memorial served a nice touch that is until they became fodder for the arrival of the Amazons. If nothing else, there is definitely a plethora of questions to be answered after events became apparent here, so it will be up to Pfeifer to manipulate the threads to the best of his abilities.

I did enjoy the artwork of Pete Woods though, and I found his storytelling to be very sound throughout. He started things off with a bang by capturing the dynamic of the Amazons over running Washington, D.C. and quickly taking control. I also liked the scene of Black Lightning showcasing his awesome power as he whisked himself into the danger zone to help out. Beyond that, the art work perfectly matched Pfeifer’s tight script and this will probably be a key ingredient in making this series into a successful one when this is all said and done.

The build-up though to Amazons Attack may seem a little rushed and from what I can gather reading the latest issue of Wonder Woman before tackling this one is probably a good idea. This series is truly going to give writer Will Pfeifer a chance to shine and thus perhaps raise his profile extensively in the next few months to come. I have always found him to be an underrated talent, but with the assistance of artist Pete Woods and the shocking reappearance of a long dead heroine this series should ignite fireworks.
