Lemire thoughtfully shows off a clip of Buddy Baker in “Tights.”
Jeff Lemire takes a moment to pause the desperate flee from the Rot by giving us a glimpse of the movie Buddy Baker starred in called Tights. The movie is about a former superhero called Red Thunder who tries to get back to being a hero because he thinks it will help him get back in good graces with his estranged family. It’s not quite Buddy’s story, but there are enough connections in theme that this issue is a wonderful, thoughtful look into his character. He loves his family, but his antics as Animal Man have put a huge stress on the family, not unlike his heroic counterpart in the movie.
Also in this issue is more of the setup for the crossover with Scott Snyder’s Swamp Thing. We don’t know anything more than we did last issue, but that is not a bad thing. The fact that Lemire is using non-standard storytelling techniques is a blessing to see in DC’s lineup. Among all of the New 52, few true risks have been taken to tell inventive stories. A full issue with no monsters and no real action could have been a death knell for another series, but in Lemire’s gifted hands it only reminds readers why this series is one of DC’s best.

Interesting issue in that it seemed to be part (possible) foreshadowing and part tribute to the films of Darren Aronofsky. One of the tiny handful of DCU comics I still buy post-reboot.
