The Avengers get attacked, again.
Brian Michael Bendis started off his final Avengers arc with a tough dilemma for the team to face: Norman Osborn has escaped prison and is attempting to turn the world against the Avengers via the media and villainous scheming. It seemed pertinent and dangerous at the time, but after two issues where the plot has not moved forward one inch, the story has lost all steam.
Last issue, we see all of the Avengers get assaulted by Osborn’s forces. This issue, we see the assault continue and each Avenger go down hard. The villains do not drop any hints about the plot, the heroes do not learn anything new about the conflict, and the reader is left wondering why they just paid $3.99 for an issue full of dull action scenes. The one character that doesn’t wind up incapacitated by the end is Vision, so it looks like it was a good idea for Tony Stark to randomly decide to rebuild him at the start of this story arc. Bendis has had an amazing run on Avengers, which makes it curious as to why his story feels like a child playing with toys instead of the world’s mightiest heroes using their fantastic talents to overcome a sinister, intelligent villain.
