The war with the Sinestro Corps escalates on Korugar and beyond, while long-forgotten prophecies begin to come true as the ultimate GL appears in the DCU…
Sinestro’s fear-inspiring Corps takes the battle to the assembled Green Lanterns in the second official chapter of this major Green Lantern event (although confusingly it’s also the third part, counting the recent Special, and is marked as such on the cover!).
Seeking out his successor, Sinestro returns to his home planet to mark out his territory, much to the detriment of incumbent GL Soranik Natu. In the outer reaches of space the Green Man searches for his fallen comrade, the robotic Stel. On Oa and Qward the two opposing sets of Corps begin to rally their forces and Sodam Yat, a Green Lantern foretold to have a great part to play in the last days of the GLC, makes his entrance…
You’ll find no grumbles from me at all about the two GL books crossing over so blatantly to tell this story. It’s a major event in the history of these characters and it’s only right that the repercussions are felt in both titles. While Green Lantern is focusing on the Earth-born Lanterns taking the battle to Qward, Green Lantern Corps examines the larger picture in dynamic, almost cinematic style.
Dave Gibbons provides a script that is full of brash, bold space opera. This is an epic battle, fought across the universe, with spectacular and awe-inspiring visuals. Patrick Gleason’s depiction of Sinestro is electrifyingly chilling and his Corps is made up of truly monstrous and gruesome aliens, accentuating the threat that the Anti-Monitor’s army represents.
Tying into the bigger picture is the appearance of the Daxamite Green Lantern Sodam Yat. This is a character that the continuity fans know has, potentially, a huge part to play in this story arc. Time will tell if his preordained role in the mythos will play out as expected.
Green Lantern Corps continues to underline what a wonderful concept the GLC is and why we should be happy to see this part of DC canon restored to its rightful place. It’s fair to say there are an awful lot of characters to keep track of, so careful reading is rewarded on a monthly basis, but this book is well worth that extra investment of time.
The resurgence in popularity of DC’s star-spanning heroes has been a very pleasing development over the last year or two. For DCU sci-fi on a grand, cosmic scale you really can’t do any better than Green Lantern Corps at the moment.
