Kyle Ryner and Guy Gardner are ushered off into space to join Kilowog in assisting the reformation of the Green Lantern Corps.

The Green Lantern mythos continues on with yet another high profile revamp in this 6 issue limited series. This time around writer Geoff Johns is joined by the esteemed talents of Dave Gibbons and Patrick Gleason to help aid him in this latest creative venture. So with the all the grand hoopla surrounding this project, I bet you are wondering if it’s well worth your money.

You better believe it is!

The issue opens up with Kyle and Guy saying their goodbyes to friends on Earth before embarking into deep space. They have been summoned to Oa at the request of the Guardians, and both heroes are wondering why they are being requested. Despite the usual antics of Gardner earlier on, the two spend the trip bantering between them, while the scene switches to other goings on in deep space. There are several scenes with idle power rings traversing outer space searching for candidates to take up the cause of the Green Lantern Corps. But once we get past all those formalities, the story kicks into high gear when Kyle and Guy reach Oa to learn the true reason for being summoned. That doesn’t go over as planned, and to make matters worse there’s a greater evil slowly seething into fruition.

I am sure this will make for an interesting second issue, and much of that credit should go to the high quality of writing shared between Johns and Gibbons. Both of these writers are no strangers to the Green Lantern mythos, especially with Johns writing Hal’s latest adventures and Gibbons working on the title in the 80’s. I think both of these guys will bring a different perspective to this story and it’s refreshing to have them both collaborating together in this fashion.

Joining the writers is a trio of artists all with substantial resumes in the industry. Patrick Gleason is relatively new to comics, but he’s been carving up a descent reputation as a penciler on Aquaman. I really enjoy his work on that book and he brings the same level of quality storytelling to this project. He’s indeed going to be a rising star, and I am sure his appointment to this book will certainly cement my sentiments about his talents. He’s also been given two quality inkers in the form of Prentis Rollins and Christian Alamy to help smooth out the rough edges. Both of these guys have been working steadily on high profile projects and this book is no exception. Good things will result from this series after it’s all said and done.

So if you are like me and are enjoying the renaissance of the current Green Lantern mythos, then I suggest picking up this title as the perfect bookend. There are enough high profile creators here to make this book a keeper, so run out and reserve your copy now! There’s nothing to fear here, so pardon the pun.
