Joshua Hale Fialkov brings his top-notch vampire horror-romance to Gotham City
The Queen of Blood has made her way to Gotham and now Andrew and co. must team up with Batman to stop her malicious plans. The fun here is the interaction between Andrew and Batman. They get off to a rocky start, but they eventually decide to work together, leaving them with an alliance that feels as safe as tiptoeing barefoot in a room full of broken glass. However, Fialkov does not miss the opportunity for some humor: they get in an elevator that leads down to a slew of vampires and Andrew says to Batman, “I like your cape.”
Andrea Sorrentino’s dark and moody art continues to stand out as one of the best-looking books in DC’s entire lineup. 28 Days Later redefined the zombie movie genre with its stylized cinematography, and now Sorrentino’s imagery has created an atmosphere so full of gritty details, shadowy forms, and horrifying transformations that it will have Hollywood wishing it had a vampire movie that felt as tense and macabre as this comic. Sorrentino’s best work comes from its subtle touches: Andrew comes and goes like a wisp of smoke, while a slow elevator ride turns into a gruesome reveal of vampires lurking in the dark.
