A true outcast fights for his soul.

Being on a big fantasy kick as of late, Boom Studios’ Valen the Outcast #1 could not have been released at a more perfect time.  The world of former King Valen is one of proud human kingdoms, dangerous woodlands, and an undead army that is poised to destroy it all.  Caught in the middle of the fantasy adventure is Valen, a once proud leader of men who is now doomed to walk his former kingdom soulless, the victim of an evil and despicable necromancer.

Writer Michael Alan Nelson does not bombard readers with the typical extensive introductions to characters and settings, and instead allows the story to organically grow from the outset.  In place of the almost requisite heavy expository scenes are numerous battles between former comrades, brooding arguments in dark forests, and a necessary comedic bar scene to lighten the mood.  Throughout the introductory issue, Nelson clearly shows how the now undead King Valen has became a true outcast; now shunned by the very people he ruled, protected, and loved.  It is the downfall of the former king that readers will surely find enticing.

Partnered with Nelson is artist Matteo Scalera, who strikes a perfect balance between gritty and grim undead armies and the vibrant human kingdom of Oakhaven.  Each setting throughout Valen looks completely unique, with a quite humorous bar scene being the standout setting.  Scalera’s greatest strength, however, is in battle scenes; with the bloody demise of King Valen’s enemies only outmatched by the horrific last page of a blood soaked boy who gained the favor of the mighty Necromancer.

Valen the Outcast #1 is a great introduction to Michael Alan Nelson’s new fantasy world.  Despite readers not being treated to the usual formal introductions (which can become rather boring in all honesty) each character feels wholly unique and fleshed out, while the settings perfectly fit the tone of the book.  Brought to life by Matteo Scalera’s art, Valen the Outcast #1 is great choice for any fantasy fan looking to broaden their horizons.
