There's no reason to not check out Wasteland.
With issue #33 being my first introduction to Antony Johnston’s post-apocalyptic world of Wasteland, it is safe to say there was a little hesitation jumping into a story that was quite deep into its tale. After a brief printed introduction to the series and a small period of time to acquaint myself with Wasteland’s characters, however, Johnston’s tale of strained relationships, tenuous agreements, and tense religious arguments completely vindicated the series of my concerns.
Unlike many other post-apocalyptic worlds, Wasteland’s well established world reads like the Old West with undertones of magic and religious fervor. The unfamiliar characters of Wasteland quickly revealed their personalities through several tense situations, as Michael, Abi, and Gerr are confronted by less than hospitable religious zealots. As the three travelers disguised as pilgrims happen upon Godsholm, the townsfolk belligerently scold them, labeling them devils, and attempt to bar them from their township. Their savior, who also harbors conflicted feelings for the town and its citizens, proves to add even more layers to the already unstable and nerve-wracking situation.
Justin Greenwood’s black-and-white chiseled art fits the anxiety filled tone of Wasteland quite well. The numerous arguments that fill the pages of this issue are made all the more impactful as the characters shout back and forth and accost each other. More impressive, moreover, is the silent scene that opens Wasteland #33, which could have easily turned confusing if not for Greenwood’s skillful handling of the situation.
For fans of post-apocalyptic stories, Wasteland proves to be a unique offering in a genre that offers a countless variety of choices. Antony Johnston takes full advantage of the beginning of a new storyline to catch readers up on his world, while also including several stressful situations that heighten the tension. When considering the all too reasonable price of the issue there truly is no reason not to give Wasteland a glance.
