THOUGHT BUBBLE MONTH 2025! Let’s say this yet again. The more I read of Rein Lee’s comics the more convinced I am of their place as one of the most exciting emerging voices in indie comics. Even when considering older work re-released in print like today’s subject I Will Meet You on the Other Side of Space. Lee has been a regular presence here at Broken Frontier over 2025 due to their place as one of our ‘Six to Watch’ creators for this year but even had that not been the case it is difficult to imagine we would not have been covering their work regardless. Haunting, lyrical comics that feel both otherworldly and yet replete with recognisable life experiences, all illustrated with the most gorgeously intricate artwork.
In minicomic I Will Meet You on the Other Side of Space we follow the story of a young boy, trawling the environs of a seemingly abandoned town looking for parts for the rocket ship he is building. Narration comes in the form of letters and notes to his mother as his quest continues, with the apparent aim of being reunited with his family again. A child’s eye view of reality as he becomes lost in his imagination or the foundation of something more poignant? That’s up to the reader to decide.
The story is told with suitably cluttered artwork that uses digital illustration, guache painting and elements of collage to bring us into this lonesome existence. Vivid colours make an interesting counterpoint to the barren nature of the surroundings the boy interacts with, giving a strangely incongruous warmth to the solitude that surrounds him. As ever from this artist I Will Meet You on the Other Side of Space is beautifully executed in its own wistful way, endlessly rewarding revisitation of its affectingly melancholic pages.
A final page image gives powerful emotional context to events. If you are unaware of the work of Rein Lee then Thought Bubble is the perfect opportunity to discover the practice of this major new talent in comics. Make sure they are at the very top of your list of must-visit creators. And check out our recent interview with Lee here.
