THOUGHT BUBBLE MONTH 2025! Do you ever spot a graphic novel or zine cover that instantly stops you in your tracks? Mære by Annabel Hewitson is one of those. Reminiscent of B. Mure’s distinctive sketchbook style, the cover shows a lone figure with their back to us, staring into an onslaught of all-consuming flames. Look closer, and hidden faces and eyes flicker within the fire – a haunting detail that foreshadows the darkness within.
The story begins when two friends attend an unusual exhibition of AI-generated art. One of them becomes transfixed, and soon, she begins to see strange, shifting images everywhere she looks. Her sense of reality fractures, slipping into a realm of cosmic horror where creation and corruption blur together.
Through stark, black-and-white pencil sketches, Hewitson reflects on the unsettling side of artificial intelligence, and how attempts to generate beauty and meaning through machines can instead create unease, distortion, and disconnection. Mære is only 25 pages long, but it lingers: eerie, incisive, and impossible to forget.
