THOUGHT BUBBLE MONTH 2025! As we cosy up for autumn and drift towards winter, short story collections feel like the perfect comfort read. There’s something so relaxing about curling up and losing yourself in a story you can devour in one sitting, so Rebecca K Jones’s Seasons couldn’t have arrived at a better time.
Seasons is a collection of four short stories exploring friendship and connection across different stages of life, including the award-winning ‘Midnight Feast’. Rather than focusing on the four seasons of the year, these stories trace the changing “seasons” of growing up: outgrowing childhood friends, falling in love for the first time, or feeling stuck in a job that doesn’t quite fit.
Drawn in loose, expressive lines and soft spot colours, Jones’s art captures memory and place with the warmth of a sketchbook and the intimacy of slice-of-life storytelling. Having been sent Jones’ Boomerang many years back (when I was a reviewer for Pipedream Comics!) it was lovely to see how her art has matured and evolved, whilst still maintaining the same things that made it so unique in the first place.
We won’t spoil the stories, but expect a little of everything; romance, friendship, loneliness, and the quiet beauty of change.
And a special mention for those gorgeous endpapers: detailed like a nature guide, they’re filled with acorns, conkers, dandelion puffs and other tiny treasures of the season.
