One of the privileges of our behind-the-scenes, off-site work at Broken Frontier is the chance to connect with emerging, often younger creators via initiatives like our Broken Frontier Connects/Small Press Day mentoring calls or our outreach work around the community. Our small press/indie/self-publishing scene in the UK remains a vibrant hub of creative activity and there are far, far more up-and-coming artists out there than we can ever get round to covering here at BF.
So when we do push someone’s debut comic crowdfunder you can be sure we have good reason. I spoke to Daisy Crouch earlier this year as part of those aforementioned Zoom calls around Small Press Day and was impressed by the sample pages of work that she had submitted in advance. They showed a confidence in style and approach and an innate understanding of comics’ unique storytelling properties. Hence why we’re pushing Daisy’s Kickstarter campaign for Very Hungry Women today at BF.
And, yes, it’s a book that leans into the world of super-heroes, a genre we don’t normally cover in much depth at Broken Frontier. That, in itself, is an indication of how much we rate her as a new prospect on the scene. Very Hungry Women has a premise that puts a definite twist on your standard super-hero fare.
You can follow Daisy Crouch on Bluesky here and Instagram here. More importantly – don’t forget to back the Kickstarter here!
