Ellie Egleton returns with an old Broken Frontier feature on the site again today. Back before the pandemic we would sift through all the many crowdfunding coverage requests we would receive here at BF each week to bring you a handful of the more intriguing, exciting, experimental and daring uses of the form that we spotted, along with some interesting campaigns we had found ourselves. These would be comics that both fitted the Broken Frontier ethos and that we thought deserved your support and backing. Welcome to the second edition of our reborn Crowdfunding Corner.
Horizon Walkers Book 1
The who and what: Lio Pressland is also known as Kroov, a trans-masc/non-binary comic artist and illustrator from Scotland. With work previously published by the likes of Critical Role, Dark Horse, Simon and Schuster, Blizzard and Lego, Horizon Walkers is sure to be good! This LGBT fantasy comic is inspired by the medieval lore of Cynocephali.
What’s on offer: The campaign offers the first book of a ten-part series. With 44 coloured pages on offer, a physical copy is on offer at £10 (just £2 more than the digital PDF) and art prints and stickers are also available as part of the £25 bundle.
Why you Should Buy It: This is a story that is set to explore themes of self-acceptance, trauma, found family and loss wrapped up in a world of fantasy. The artwork is gorgeous and the characters have been well thought-out, leading to what can only be a great story!
Gale Allen and the Girl Squadron
The who and what: Dark Wolfe Publishing is a boutique publisher focused on bringing golden age fantasy and sci-fi to the modern age. With a focus on careful restoration and beautiful presentation, they promise 220 pages of space action featuring Gale Allen.
What’s on offer: Gale Allen’s adventures have been split into 6 comics. With the complete bundle starting at £35, backers get her completed adventures. Additional bundles include a book of her prints and a printed thank you.
Why you should buy it: This is the publisher’s third campaign where a character from the Golden Age has been given new life. Every single Gale Allen strip is in this book, all collected from the public domain.
Sticker Knight #1 and #2
The who and what: The creative team behind Sticker Knights are hoping to publish two issues of their black-and-white book which sees a knight armed in stickers adopt the mantle of a fallen foe. It looks to be a fun adventure!
What’s on offer: Choose whether to pick up a single issue or both comics in a bundle. There are also add-ons available should you wish to catch up on the creators’ previous work.
Why you should buy it: A knight covered in stickers is a fun concept and it is always good to invest in young writers like H. L. Roberts – you never know what they create next!
The Story of a Socially Awkward Misfit
The who and what: Ross Hendrick is a cartoonist who has worked for well-known British comics such as The Beano and Viz. This campaign celebrates 10 years of his character, Sam (Socially Awkward Misfit) and promises to tell the story of how he came about.
What’s on offer: Rewards start at £7 for a digital copy of the book, £10 for the printed book and then increase to £50 for a bundle that includes original artwork.
Why you should buy it: This book shows the complete journey of a creator and their story. Collecting everything from initial sketches to seeing the character animated for film; this is a celebration of progress.
