Creator Opportunities at Broken Frontier

Want to take further advantage of some of the extra opportunities to promote your work at Broken Frontier? Below are a number of initiatives we have in place to help you create your own content and raise the profile of your work. From guest blogs to free advertising for marginalised voices in comics we want to hear from you!

Please note that BF is a community-based platform and we do not accept submissions from anyone affiliated to comics hate movements.

Free Advertising

What are your advertising rates?

There are none. Our advertising is curated in-house and offered for free to small press creators we champion or organisations we have community-based partnerships with. We are particularly keen, however, to hear from creators whose comics projects amplify the voices/stories of the LGBTQ+ community, PoC, or any marginalised groups for free ad spots.

How do I apply for free advertising if my work spotlights marginalised voices?

E-mail our Andy Oliver with details of your project and specifications for ad images. His e-mail details are here.

Guest Blogs

Do you accept guest blogs?

We do accept guest articles on topical talking points, event coverage and subjects of interest to the comics community. Some past popular examples over the years have included:

Avery Hill’s Ricky Miller on the need for a British comic awards

Joe Stone on the work of the WIP Comics support group

Amneet Johal on the challenges of organising a small press fair

Joe Decie on TCAF

Comic Printing UK on a printer’s perspective of the comics small press scene

How can I discuss a potential topic with you?

E-mail our Andy Oliver first. His e-mail details are here.

Please note: we do not accept submissions for paid-for advertising masquerading as guest blogs.

Inside Look Creator Commentaries

What are Inside Looks at Broken Frontier?

Inside Look is our creator commentary feature where writers/artists can discuss their creative process and behind-the-scenes details of their comics with reference to specific pages or images. Here are some good examples.

How can I take part?

E-mail our Andy Oliver first to signal your interest. His e-mail details are here.

What do I need to provide in terms of word count?

We suggest 100-200 words per image/page and 4-6 images/pages. You are, of course, welcome to write more.

Can I include other material in the discussion of my work?

Certainly. In addition to pages from their comics past contributors have included such things as script breakdowns, sketchbook roughs, reference photos, process videos and related ephemera.

The Gosh! Comics and Broken Frontier Drink and Draw

What is the Gosh! Comics and Broken Frontier Drink and Draw?

Debuting 2015 and running in-person in London until 2020 the Gosh! Comics and Broken Frontier Drink and Draw has been a hugely successful comics community social event. You can find out about the history of the Drink and Draw here.

Does it still run since the pandemic?

Since the pandemic we have switched the event to twice a month on Thursday nights on Twitter between 7.15pm and 9.00pm UK time. Our online D&D allows us to reach an international audience with participants from across the UK, in Europe and North America now joining in. You can see examples of the work produced on the Twitter hashtag #GoshBFDD.

How can I get involved?

It’s an open event on Twitter, advertised every fortnight on BF. With three guest artists choosing the drawing themes each time, though, we’d love to hear from you if you would like to be one of our featured creators. You also get a shout-out on BF that week with links to your work. International artists welcome! E-mail our Andy Oliver. His e-mail details are here. Publishers are also welcome to talk to us if you want to arrange a special themed night for your creators.

Covers Album

What is Covers Album at Broken Frontier?

Our ‘Covers Album’ feature is where we ask comics creators, publishers and commentators to pick three of their favourite comic covers… but with a small twist. One must be chosen for aesthetic reasons, one for inspirational reasons and one for pure nostalgia! You can see past editions of it here.

How can I take part?

E-mail our Andy Oliver first to signal your interest. His e-mail details are here.

What do I need to provide in terms of word count?

It can be as little as 100-200 words per section. You are, of course, welcome to write more and .jpgs of the covers you have chosen are helpful too, especially if the work is more obscure.

What can be included in terms of covers and what can’t?

We’re a comics/sequential art site but we can bend the rules here if the cover is for graphic narrative outside of the rigid definitions of comics (children’s picture books, zines, etc.).

Broken Frontier is an inclusive site that does not promote the work of those involved in comics hate movements so artists who are a part of such groups are not eligible for inclusion. For that reason we ask that you let us know before you start writing which three covers you have chosen.

The other thing we ask is that you don’t pick your own projects, or books you have published, for inclusion however tempting that may be! 🙂

Is there anything else I need to send you?

We want to give you a spotlight as well so make sure to send us a short bio paragraph about past, present and future projects, and any social media/site links you would also like added.
