LDCOMICS ONLINE COMIC FAIR 2025! Eva C is a Latin American cartoonist based in NYC, turning life’s weird, funny, and quietly gut-punching moments into comics. Her work draws on her own experiences and the stories people carry around with them – messy, moving, and always human.
At only ten pages long, How to Break a Fall really has a cover that draws the eye; in the center, a young girl plays with a row of paper dolls, and surrounding, various square panels show a mix of emotions – the girl exhilarated, happy, sad, and hurt. Upon reading, the mixed bag of panels makes perfect sense: these are the emotions our protagonist feels all at once when she has her first experience with death – when a neighbour dies by suicide.
How to Break a Fall is autobiographical, so this really happened to author Eva at only nine-years-old. Through ten pages of sketches and limited words, young Eva contends with the question that looms over her: why would someone take their own life?
We as the reader come along with Eva, as she searches for answers with a child’s innocence – she is unable to understand why, and requires a black and white answer. The entirety of the comic follows Eva’s trains of thought, and trying to make sense of a tragic situation.
The style is ink-black and white with pops of green, and takes inspiration from children’s books that navigate difficult subjects whilst remaining whimsical.
How to Break a Fall is available until the end of July, exclusively at LDComics Fair.
