Do your reading tastes range from These Savage Shores, March and Bitter Root to Minor Leagues, Spinning or My Favorite Thing is Monsters?

Do you love both self-publishing and the very best of indie comics, or have a strong affinity for the works of breakout talent like Lorena Alvarez, Jayde Perkin, Sabba Khan, Ben Passmore, Ellice Weaver, Ram V and Tillie Walden?

Are you interested in the output of boundary-pushing publishers and collectives like Koyama Press, Avery Hill Publishing, Breakdown Press, Silver Sprocket, Fantagraphics Books, Conundrum Press, Khidr Comix Lab, SelfMadeHero, Shortbox and the Kadak Collective?

Do you select your comics based on the quality of their contents no matter which country they come from?

Do you like to discuss both the past, present and future of the medium and what makes it a great art form?

Are you interested in celebrating comics community and providing a platform for marginalised voices in the medium?

If the answer to any of these questions is yes and if you’ve always wanted to become a comics commentator (or already have ample experience covering comics) then we’re eager to hear from you here at Broken Frontier!

Passion for comics and comics community is (y)our driving force

We are a bunch of creative and critical comics activists from all over the world with a deeply rooted love for all things sequential art. It’s that similar passion that drives us and which makes writing for BF a great experience. As Frontierspeople, we are united in a passion to explore the entirety of the comics universe. We’re here to make a positive difference in comics coverage, to champion exciting new voices in the medium, to celebrate everything unique about the art form, and to promote the very best in comics community.

If you feel that way too, then we look forward to hearing from you!

Please note that there is no financial compensation involved for any staff position. From the top down, all BF staff members contribute voluntarily.

What level of writing are we looking for at Broken Frontier?

We’re looking for writers with a lively style that will engage our audience and who show an ability to understand, critique and analyse the particular language and mechanics of comics as a form. We’ve linked to the work of four of our team members here to give you an idea of what makes a good fit for Broken Frontier and its readership, and the level of writing we’re looking for. It’s a very high standard but that’s what makes BF’s commentary the respected force it is on the scene.

The Broken Frontier ethos

Broken Frontier is committed to prioritising where possible comics practice that promotes social justice, social outreach, diversity, inclusivity, activism and community. Before applying, please read our team statement here about how we want to proactively adapt during these unprecedented times we find ourselves living in with an increased focus in our approach to our content.

How to apply

You can apply for a spot on our staff by emailing us at joinus@brokenfrontier.com. Make sure to include a full overview of your current reading list and either two samples of recent writing about comics if you are an experienced comics commentator or one sample review if this is your first time, in a text document format. A resume is welcome but not required.

Since with great power comes great responsibility, please start off your application letter by answering the question how you intend to help make Broken Frontier a better destination for quality comics coverage. We’ll get back to you shortly afterwards.

What we’re currently interested in…

While we welcome all applications (especially those interested in small press and alt comics) we’re specifically looking at the moment for reviews/interviewers/feature writers with an interest in covering socially inclusive projects. Please note that while we too have a deep fondness for super-heroes (and the fantastic worlds they inhabit) they are mostly outside of our coverage and we are not currently looking for writers in that area.

Thanks for your interest in Broken Frontier!
